Connect Conway
The City of Conway was awarded a $24.6 million federal grant in 2022 that will transform public transportation in the city by connecting several major landmarks and places of interest, including schools, companies, retail areas, and neighborhoods through the Connect Conway greenway trail.
Connect Conway will connect 10 parks, seven schools, three major retail areas, three universities, 14 major employment centers, 16 neighborhoods and other vital community services. It aims to build a safe, equitable, and accessible transportation system through investment in 15 miles of bike and pedestrian infrastructure, providing a viable transportation option for many.
The grant was awarded to the city by the United States Department of Transportation to construct the 15-mile greenway trail. The money comes from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity discretionary grant program.
In April, the Conway City Council approved Crafton Tull for components 1 and 4 of the project — Little Creek Plaza and east of I-40 — and Garver for components 2 and 3 — west of I-40. The first phase will consist of design review, environmental review, and right of way purchase.
Pompe Park
The City of Conway opened the Veterans Plaza at Pompe Park on Prince Street in 2023. The plaza features a grass amphitheater, pavilion and seating areas, and the recognition of veterans from each military branch.
This year, work was completed on phase two of the Pompe Park project which added two pedestrian bridges to connect the plaza to the mountain bike trail and pump track at Pompe Park.
In June, the Conway City Council approved funds to add parking near Morningside Drive and trail connections and a bathroom near the pavilion.
Conway Community Center
Conway voters approved a community center in a February 2022 special election that will see the city add a 133,000-square-foot facility that features an eight-lane, competition pool, a community fitness center, and an outdoor pool area complete with a lazy river, tot pool, and water slides.
The community center will also feature eight volleyball courts, 12 pickleball courts, an indoor track, community lounge, and party rooms.
As of August, construction has been progressing, and the city anticipates opening next summer.
Soccer Complex
The City of Conway has begun construction on a new soccer complex that will feature 10 fields, splash pad, pavilion, and walking trail. Funding for the project was approved by Conway voters in February 2022 in a special election.
The complex is on 54 acres next to Curtis Walker Park and Theodore Jones Elementary School on Museum Road.
The city anticipates having its first soccer season at the new complex in the spring.
Meadows Tech Park Trail
Conway recently added a new mountain bike trail in south Conway in the Meadows Technology Park. The mostly green trail offers some progression built into an easy flowing single track with a few berms and rollers. The trail will be home to two Arkansas NICA mountain biking events this fall.
