The University of Central Arkansas is taking its next major step toward replacing the Farris Center, sharing new conceptual renderings and details of a proposed multipurpose arena during its Board of Trustees meeting on Dec. 5.

Architects from WER presented the findings of a recently completed feasibility study, which imagines a 116,000-square-foot arena built just north of Estes Stadium on Bruce Street. The project would replace the 53-year-old Farris Center and become the new home of UCA men’s and women’s basketball.

Early plans show seating for 2,650 for basketball games, along with a full practice gym and dedicated basketball operations space. The design also aims to expand UCA’s capacity to host large-scale events — from commencements (up to 3,000 seats) to concerts (3,600 seats) and special events (1,200 seats).

Because of its proximity to Estes Stadium, the facility is also envisioned as part of the footprint for Bears Football, closing in the stadium’s north end zone and adding locker rooms and operations space.

With the feasibility work complete, WER, along with associate architect HKS, will move into formal design. If the board ultimately signs off on construction plans, work could begin as early as fiscal year 2027.

UCA President Houston Davis said the initial concepts highlight the long-term impact of the project.

“Seeing the early concepts for this facility underscores just how transformational it could be for our campus,” Davis said. “A modern, flexible facility will not only elevate the experience for our student-athletes, but also strengthen our ability to host major events that bring our community together.”
