Baptist Health Medical Center-Conway believes that health care is a ministry, not just a business. As the hospital celebrates its 10th anniversary this September, it is reflecting not just on the growth of its facility or advancements in technology, but on the people who make this healing ministry a reality.

The hospital’s guiding motto is simple: “There is nothing more important than our people and our patients.” This philosophy is foundational to the facility, which was designed with extensive input from a local stakeholder steering committee to ensure a patient-centered environment. BHMC-Conway officially opened its doors Sept. 16, 2016.

“Our story isn’t written in the facilities we have opened,” said April Bennett, president of Baptist Health Medical Center-Conway. “It is written in the lives we have had the honor to heal.”

Baptist Health’s healing ministry, rooted in faith and compassion, has consistently worked to bridge health care gaps in Faulkner County, ensuring residents no longer have to travel long distances for specialized services.

A Decade of Clinical Growth and Innovation

Since opening, BHMC-Conway has grown significantly to meet the region’s needs. By evaluating community feedback, the hospital has successfully introduced critical service lines including pulmonology, endocrinology, obstetrical care and gastroenterology.

“We are also fortunate to be part of the Baptist Health system for when patients require more extensive services that are not offered in Conway,” Bennett said. “As part of the system, our physicians and team members can collaborate directly with individuals at other Baptist Health facilities to ensure patients receive the care they need.”

BHMC-Conway has earned official recognition for its high standards of emergency care. The hospital is a certified Level III Trauma Center and is certified as a Primary Stroke Center through DNV Healthcare, meaning the team is specially trained to provide fast, expert treatment. It is also the only “Baby-Friendly” designated facility in Faulkner County.

The evolution of medical technology at the center has been robust. Having debuted with 100% “smart beds,” BHMC-Conway continues to serve as a pilot site for innovation. Recent implementations include patient-centered rounding software that allows leadership to evaluate the patient experience in real time, and tablets integrated with medical records to keep patients informed about their treatment plans. Additionally, the hospital has introduced cutting-edge devices like Inspire and Genio for specialized disease treatment.

Capacity has also seen a boost through the expansion of intensive care and medical/surgical units, alongside the growth of a dedicated inpatient rehabilitation unit.

A Culture of Engagement and Workforce Dedication

While the hospital offers world-class resources, the heart of BHMC-Conway is its staff. Nearly 20 percent of the workforce has been with the hospital since its opening year – a significant statistic in a challenging national landscape for clinical recruitment. This tenure is a direct result of a retention strategy focused on culture and engagement.

“This longevity speaks to a culture where employees don’t just work here – they belong here,” Bennett said. “Our hope is that every employee feels valued and respected, and truly understands what our Mission is and how their role supports it.”

To sustain this, BHMC-Conway utilizes town halls, huddles and internal appreciation events. Long-tenured staff members are being honored this year with “Since Year One” badge buddies as a testament to their commitment.

Transforming the Patient Experience

BHMC-Conway is committed to viewing health care through the eyes of the patient. Moving beyond traditional surveys received weeks after discharge, the leadership team conducts real-time rounds to hear immediate feedback during hospitalizations. This allows for instant recognition of exceptional providers and swift resolution of improvement opportunities.

To further this connection, BHMC-Conway initiated a Patient and Family Advisory Council, where representatives meet routinely to provide input on hospital operations. This commitment resonates with patients. During recent rounds, one patient shared: “I’ve never been in a hospital where people care so much about people.”

Community-Driven Mission: The 10 for 10 Initiative

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, BHMC-Conway launched the “10 for 10 Initiative,” partnering with local organizations to address social determinants of health through 10 distinct acts of service out in the community.

This initiative has already seen success, such as raising over $2,100 for the THV11 Annual Summer Cereal Drive. Other efforts include organizing hygiene kits and passing pass out snacks for Deliver Hope and stocking care closets for the Conway Public School District, reinforcing the hospital’s role as a vital community pillar. In addition, efforts include organizing community education such as a Stop the Bleed training class free of charge for community members to learn how to respond in a life-threatening emergency.

As BHMC-Conway enters its second decade, its top strategic priority is its workforce. Bennett underscores that every goal regarding quality, service and growth depends on the dedicated professionals within the building. By sustaining a strong foundation of trained healthcare professionals, the hospital aims to continue fulfilling its promise of delivering care through Christian compassion.
